From Tuscany to the Desert: Our Take on a Super Tuscan

You’ve probably heard the term “Super Tuscan” tossed around at wine shops or fancy dinners, but what does it actually mean?

Super Tuscans are bold, rebellious red wines born in Tuscany, Italy. In the 1970s, a few renegade winemakers defied Italy’s strict wine laws, which mandated traditional blends dominated by Sangiovese. Instead, they started experimenting, adding grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot to create powerful, complex wines that didn’t fit the rules… but tasted amazing.

The wine world took notice. Even though these wines were labeled as lowly “table wine” at the time, critics and collectors quickly recognized their quality. Today, Super Tuscans are among Italy’s most sought-after bottles, and they’re no longer tied to outdated blending rules.

At Skyhaven, we’re bringing that same spirit of innovation to Southern Arizona. Our version of a Super Tuscan blends Sangiovese, the heart of Tuscany, with Petit Verdot, a bold Bordeaux varietal known for its deep color and intensity. The result? A wine that’s rich, structured, and desert-grown, but rooted in old-world inspiration.

We’re getting ready to bottle our Super Tuscan, called Artificer. We can't wait to share it with you. Watch this space for updates straight from the cellar.
