People keep telling us, “Ohhh, I love Arizona Sangio!” And honestly? Same.

Sangiovese (that’s San-gee-oh-VAY-zay) is a red grape from Italy, but here in Arizona, it takes on a vibe of its own. It's not super big or spicy. Instead, it’s fresh, smooth, and bright. We think it’s the kind of red you’ll want to pour more often than not.

What Is Sangiovese?

Sangiovese is Italy’s workhorse red — the backbone of Chianti and Brunello — with ancient roots in Tuscany. Its name is said to come from sanguis Jovis (“blood of Jupiter”), which hints at just how legendary it is. It’s easy to pair with food and usually tastes like cherries or berries, with a hint of herbs, and mouth-watering tang. But we’re not trying to recreate Tuscany here. We’re letting Arizona do its thing.

Why Arizona Sangiovese Stands Out

Arizona’s high-elevation vineyards, especially those in Willcox, bring a unique spin to this classic grape. Hot days build flavor; cool nights preserve acidity. The result? A wine that’s vibrant, medium-bodied, and fruit-forward, with a refreshing edge and none of the heavy oak or syrupy jamminess you might find elsewhere.

At Skyhaven, our 2023 Sangiovese was aged for 18 months in neutral oak to let the fruit and savory layers take center stage. It’s expressive, balanced, and incredibly food-friendly.

How to Serve & Pair It

We recommend a slight chill (60–65°F) to bring out its best. It’s a casual weeknight wine that still holds its own at the dinner table or your next gathering.

Try it with:

  • Tomato-based pastas (Marinara, Amatriciana, Bolognese)

  • Wood-fired pizza (especially Margherita or mushroom)

  • Grilled chicken or pork with rosemary, garlic, or fennel

  • Herb-roasted veggies or Tuscan-style white beans

  • Hard cheeses like Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano

Come Taste It for Yourself

Our 2023 Sangiovese is headlining the flight in our just-opened Skyhaven tasting room, and it’s already getting rave reviews from early visitors. If you’re planning a trip to Willcox, make us part of your route. The tasting room is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Cheers!
